About Anchor

A church on the waterfront

We started in 2011 in a rented hall by the ferry dock. Here’s how we got to Wharf Street, what we believe and who leads us.

Our story

Folding chairs in a rented hall

Anchor started in 2011, when nine people began meeting in the hall by the ferry dock. Every Sunday they set up sixty folding chairs and usually needed about twenty. Ruth, who was then a youth pastor across town, came to help for a month and stayed.

In 2018 the city sold the old customs house on Wharf Street, and the church bought it with a lot of help and a very patient bank. We still put out folding chairs for the overflow at the 11.

What we believe

What we believe

01

Jesus

He is the steady centre when everything else moves. We trust him with our lives and our questions.

02

The Bible

We read it together every week, and it has the final word on how we live.

03

Grace

Nobody earns a place here, so nobody gets to act like they did.

04

Each other

We carry each other’s groceries, kids and grief. Home groups are where that mostly happens.

05

The waterfront

We want our part of the city to be better because Anchor is in it.

Who leads us

Ruth has been our lead pastor since 2014. She grew up on a fishing boat and still can’t sit through a sermon about storms without taking notes.
